SCHOOL BUS EVACUATION

In accordance with the requirements of Bulletin 1191 of the Louisiana Department of Education and Section 17 of the National Highway Safety Act, the Iberville Parish School Board authorizes the following policy concerning the emergency evacuation of school buses:

  1. Students who ride a school bus must be instructed in organized emergency exit procedures.  Schools shall organize and conduct, in accordance with the Louisiana School Bus Operator Training Manual, emergency drills for all students who may ride school buses.

  2. One emergency exit drill shall be held during the first six weeks of each school semester.  School Board administrators must provide opportunities at the beginning of each semester for all students riding a school bus to and from school and/or school-related activities to participate in emergency drill exits.

  3. Allow for individual differences in jumping out the emergency door.  Instruct helpers to offer a helping hand palm up and avoid grasping a child's hand or arm.

  4. Students shall practice going a distance of at least 100 feet from the bus and remain there in a group until further directions are given by the principal or persons assigned by the principal to act in a supervisory capacity.

  5. Drills are to be held on school grounds, during school hours, in a safe place and under supervision.

  6. Drills should be conducted using these combinations of exits.

  1. Front exit only

  2. Rear exit only

  3. Front and rear exit together

  1. Time and record each drill.

  2. Complete and return an emergency school bus evacuation drill report to the Supervisor of Transportation within five (5) days of the drill.
