NAMING OF FACILITIES

The Iberville Parish School Board believes naming a school is a matter of great importance. The School Board shall not be influenced in its decision by personal prejudice or favoritism, political pressure, or temporary popularity in choosing a name. No school, school building, or other public building shall be named after any living person, or any person who has been deceased for fewer than five (5) years.  However, a street that is maintained by the School Board and that is not a state or federal highway, or any existing athletic facilities at a school within the School Board’s jurisdiction may be named in honor of a living person.

The Superintendent shall be responsible for soliciting names from staff, students, and the community and shall implement the procedures listed in the next section to follow in naming school properties.  These procedures include a timetable for the naming process in order to lessen any community or factional pressures that may build up when a selection is delayed or seems uncertain.

CRITERIA

When a request is made to name a school, school facility, or private drive or street in honor of an individual, the Iberville Parish School Board will be guided by the following criteria.  The individual for whom a school, school facility, or private drive or street would be named shall:

  1. Have made substantial contributions to his/her field of endeavor or to society in general; or,

  2. Have made significant contributions to the development of the school system or the State of Louisiana in education, the arts, public life, or some other appropriate field of endeavor; and,

  3. When possible, have had some significant connection with the school system, either as a student, an alumnus, a faculty member, an administrator, a donor, or a supporter.

  4. In any event, the individual must have been of such outstanding character and distinction that naming a school, school facility, or private drive or street after him/her would honor the Iberville Parish School System as well as the individual.

PROCEDURE

All requests for naming schools, school facilities, or private drives or streets, shall be submitted to the Superintendent in writing.

If the request is made to name a school, school facility, or private drive or street, in honor of an individual, the request shall include a biography of the individual to be honored and said biography should conform to the above-stated criteria.  The requester shall provide any other information requested by the Superintendent.

School, School Facility, Private Drive or Street

When a request is made, the Superintendent shall have the discretion to determine if the request is legitimate and conforms to the above-stated criteria. If the Superintendent finds that the request conforms to the stated criteria, he/she shall then delegate to an appropriate staff member the responsibility to solicit names from staff, students, and the community.  The timeline for solicitation for names will be five (5) school days.  If there are no additional names submitted, the Superintendent may submit the recommendation to the School Board.  In the event there are multiple names submitted, the Superintendent shall form a committee.  The committee shall include among others, representatives from the community in which the school, school facility, or private drive or street is located, employees of the school system and a member of the School Board.  The School Board member shall be appointed by the School Board President.

The committee shall then submit a recommendation to the Superintendent with assigned priorities to the names submitted or a recommendation that the school, school facility, private drive or street not be named after anyone at this time.  The Superintendent will then make a recommendation to the School Board.
