SELECTION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS

The Iberville Parish School Board is legally responsible for all matters relating to the operation of Iberville Parish Schools.  Library media directors shall evaluate, select, and requisition library materials in accordance with needs and financial resources available as prescribed by the School Board.

In keeping with School Board philosophy, the following criteria should be considered to assure appropriate selection of needed materials:

Selection shall be based on the needs of the individual school using knowledge of the existing collection and with changing needs of the curriculum in mind.

C.

Selection shall be based upon actual and potential need, upon the financial resources at hand, and upon the materials themselves.  Personal examination of materials is recommended whenever possible.

D.

Selection shall provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum, taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, and maturity levels of the students served.

E.

Selection shall provide materials that stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation, aesthetic values, ethical standards, and variety of format.

G.

Selection shall provide materials representative of the many religious, ethnic, and cultural groups and their contributions to our American heritage.

H.

Selection of materials shall be considered for purchase on the basis of overall purpose, timeliness, readability, and popular appeal.

I.

Selection of materials shall be based upon careful and skillful personal examination when possible, the intelligent use of reliable selection aides, reviews, and/or reputation and significance of the author, producer, and publisher.
