SECTION 504 PROVISIONS

 

 

It is the policy of the Iberville Parish School System to provide a free and appropriate public education to each "handicapped" student within jurisdiction, regardless of the nature of the handicap.

 

It is the intent of the Iberville Parish School System to ensure that students who are handicapped within the definition of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are identified, evaluated and provided with appropriate educational services.  Students may be handicapped under this policy even though they do not require services pursuant to the Individuals with the Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

 

The Iberville Parish School System will utilize a Section 504 Committee at the school level that consists of the following persons:

 

1)

504 Chairperson

 

2)

a school administrator (principal or designee)

 

3)

student's teacher or other professionals knowledgeable of the child (speech therapist, Chapter I teacher, school counselor)

 

4)

pupil appraisal personnel (when necessary)

 

5)

parent and student or other appropriate persons

 

504 Committee makeup will vary based on each individual case.  Referrals and decisions regarding students will be made on an individual basis by members of the 504 Committee.  However, decisions regarding the student need will be determined by a minimum of three committee members.

 

A parish resource guide that includes a process for identifying, evaluating and planning for students identified as handicapped under 504 will be used by all 504 Committees.  The guide provides an explanation of the step-by-step process and forms to be completed by the Committee.  The process will be followed in accordance with the outline in the resource guide.

 

Due process rights of handicapped students and their parents under Section 504 will be enforced.
