SUICIDE
The Iberville Parish School Board recognizes that depression and suicide are problems of increasing severity among youth, which has a debilitating effect on the school environment. For this reason, the School Board authorizes the Superintendent and staff to establish and maintain a suicide prevention and intervention program throughout the schools of the parish. Such a program shall, at a minimum, be aimed at alerting staff to the commonly recognized signs of suicide, and provide training to teachers and other employees in suicide prevision, intervention, and post-intervention suicide situations. In accordance with state law, teachers, school counselors, principals, and certain other school administrators as determined by the School Board, shall be required to receive two (2) hours of annual inservice training in suicide prevention.
The Superintendent and/or his/her designee shall develop pertinent procedures for the notification of school staff and parents of any report of student behavior that may suggest suicide and the subsequent steps school personnel shall take to evaluate the student’s behavioral risks and develop appropriate recommendations for assistance.
ABUSE AND NEGLECT
If the student behavior problems fall within the definition of abuse as found in School Board policy JGCE, Child Abuse, then all school employees with knowledge shall be considered mandatory reporters and the allegations must be reported to child protection or law enforcement as provided by state law and School Board policy on child abuse. Such reporting must be made in addition to any procedures for handling evaluations of risk of suicide.
